🏋️ Research experience

See all ongoing and past projects here.

🤿 Occupational diving experience

  • PADI Dive Master at Dive Center Manly, Sydney (Nov 2024–Feb 2025).
Guided many shore dives, scuba diving refresher courses and snorkelling tours for tourists and local divers.

  • Dive Research Coordinator at Macquarie University (2025).
Led two research field trips (Sydney and Ningaloo, Australia), with responsibility for dive safety protocols, logistics, and team coordination during dives and snorkel operations.

🛠️ Skills

🐟 Data collection

  • Fish behaviour in the wild: Designed and implemented experiments to observe fish behaviour in the field using scuba diving, snorkelling and live or remote video recordings. Analysed videos manually or using Boris software.
  • Marine fieldwork organisation: Planned and led two field trips involving scuba diving and snorkelling in Australia. Responsibilities included securing funding, obtaining permits and ethics approval, risk assessments, team training, and field logistics.
  • Fish behaviour in the lab: Designed and set up laboratory experiments to video-record fish behaviour (such as tool use, personality, mate choice). Analysed videos manually or with automatic position tracking on R.
  • Community science: Developed a campaign to collect data and raise awareness about fish tool use, which included creating a questionnaire, coding a website in CSS and HTML, developing an email sending strategy and creating social media posts.
  • Snail behaviour and morphology in the lab: Reared Physa acuta snails with or without odours of predators in the lab and assessed their anti-predator defences (morphology and behaviour). Analysed their morphology using ImageJ or the Momocs R package.
  • Microsatellite sequencing: Performed DNA extraction, PCR and peak assignment on Geneious.
  • RAD sequencing: Performed DNA extraction and library preparation for Illumina sequencing.

🔎 Data analysis

I believe data analysis is my favourite part of the research process. I completed all statistical analyses in my projects and got involved in two projects to help with data analysis (ending up in two publications: Clark-Shen et al. 2024 and Loéva et al. 2025). I have also taught data analysis.

  • Data wrangling using R and the tidyverse R package
  • Linear models in R including generalised and mixed models
  • Complex random effect structure modelling of linear models using frequentist and Bayesian approaches in R to model behavioural individuality and plasticity
  • Principal Component Analysis in R
  • Survival analysis in R
  • Quantitative genetics
  • Parentage analysis with the software Colony
  • Genetic structure analysis with the software Genetix

💻 Data management

  • Version control using git
  • Code and data sharing: Prepared datasets, data dictionaries, annotated codes and licences following FAIR principles. Shared them on GitHub, Zenodo or OSF.
  • Reproducible workflow: Created clear folder structures within R projects, used renv for dependency management, automated data processing and figure generation, annotated code.

🤗️ Result Sharing and Outreach

  • Conference organisation: Chair of the SORTEE conference committee in 2025, overseeing the successful organisation of their virtual conference on open science. Served as the program manager of the SORTEE conference committee in 2023 and 2024.

  • Social media engagement: Developed a social media campaign for the fish tool use project. Produced engaging posts and reels for Instagram using Adobe Premiere Pro.

  • Press release writing: Wrote two press releases and followed a 2-day science communitication online workshop.

  • Popular science communication: Interviewed for a Canadian radio. Reached the semi-finals of the 2023 FameLab competition, which included a one-day online training in science communication.

  • Popular science writing: Authored two popular science articles in French about my PhD project (article 1 and article 2).

  • Academic communication:

    • Collaborative paper writing: Managed collaborative writing with multiple authors.
    • Document writing and editing: Wrote manuscripts on LateX, Word or Google Docs.
    • Oral and poster presentation at scientific conferences. Used powerpoint (oral presentation) or Adobe Illustrator (poster). See all my conference contributions here.
    • Scientific figure creation: I believe figure creation is the my second favourite part of the research process, after data analysis! I use Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape and the ggplot2 R package.

    • Co-supervised 5 graduate and 1 undergraduate biology students: Cyndi-Lee Harrison-Burgess,Loéva Martin-Podevin, Alice Fontaine, Anaïs Arzel, Estelle Champion, Delia Ben Sussan.
    • Attended a half-day workshop ‘Giving effective feedback’ co-organised by Hugh Kearns and Macquarie University.
    • I would like to receive more supervision training in my next position.

Other personal and interpersonal skills

  • Teamwork and collaboration: Worked both in person and remotely with international teams.
  • Team management. Coordinated team of 3-4 people for lab experiments and fieldwork.
  • Fluent in English and French
  • International relations
  • Self-motivation and management
  • Adaptation to change and flexibility: Completed four research internships, one PhD and one postdoc, all of which in different labs and 4 different countries
  • Problem solving and creative thinking: Academic research requires daily problem-solving and the ability to address unexpected challenges.
  • Attention to detail: Research work demands meticulous attention to detail to minimise errors and ensure accurate findings
